Scandium is very widely but thinly distributed, and its only rich mineral is the rare thortveitite. Yttrium and lanthanum are both obtained from lanthanide minerals and the method of extraction depends on the particular mineral involved.
Scandium has one stable isotope, and yttrium itself has only one stable isotope, 89 Y, which is also the only isotope that occurs naturally. However, the lanthanide rare earths contain elements of even atomic number and many stable isotopes.
Scandium alkoxides represent a class of compound as yet with poorly characterized structures. Attempted synthesis of the isopropoxide Sc(OPr i ) 3 results in the production 78 of a pentanuclear compound [Sc 5 O(OPr i ) 13 ], similar to those formed by yttrium, ytterbium, and indium.
Scandium (Sc) and yttrium (Y) are always included, but the other two spaces are usually occupied by lanthanum (La) and actinium (Ac), or by lutetium (Lu) and lawrencium (Lr); less frequently, it is considered the group should be expanded to 32 elements (with all the lanthanides and actinides included) or contracted to contain only scandium and yttrium.
Yttrium oxide (Y 2 O 3) and yttrium orthovanadate (YVO 4) are both combined with europium to produce the red phosphor used in color televisions. Garnets made from yttrium and iron (Y 3 Fe 5 O 12) are used as microwave filters in microwave communications equipment. Garnets made from yttrium and aluminum (Y 3 Al 5 O 12) are used in jewelry as simulated diamond.
Scandium is very much a late starter compared to many of the other elements, due to its relatively low occurrence and the difficulty in obtaining it from its ores. For example, it wasn't until the 1960s when the first pound, or 450 grams, of high purity scandium was obtained. Compounds of scandium find use in organic chemistry.
