The Merensky Reef was the principal source of pgm from the time that it was first worked in 1925 until the end of the 20th century. However, extraction of other reefs has grown in importance, and by 2011 the Merensky Reef accounted for only 22 per cent of all the platinum ore processed in South Africa.
